Type 3 & 6

- The heart of the problem

Type 3 and 6 Within Enneatemps:

Here I want to propose where Types 3 and 6 can be located within the Enneatemps map.

In order to figure that out, I first tried to find a place where to position the Hornevian and Harmonic groups within Enneatemps.

The following two figures came to mind:

Figure 1: Hornevian Group within Enneatemps

Figure 2: Harmonic Group within Enneatemps

Trying to find the positions of types 3 and 6 within the Hornevian and Harmonic groups, I found that types 3 and 6 are everywhere in the map of temperaments!

Within the Hornevian group (see the illustration below), the dutiful group including types 1 and 2 is located within the range of the dry / wet area, which is also in the hot area. That is where I would put type 6 as well.

Figure 3: Positioning of Type 3 and 6 based on Hornevians within Enneatemps

Consequently, hot within Enneatemps has the meaning of being able to crystallize thoughts in a focal point, or as my teacher Russ Hudson recently mentioned, it is the place where types are likely to be over-determined.

Of course! How can a person be dutiful if he or she can't come to conclusions! If I am not determined and scattered in my thoughts, how can I be dutiful? This is in fact a coaching aspect for people, who can not crystallize their thoughts, they can not be dutiful!

The same applies for the assertive types of 7s and 8s. They are in the same place as the dutiful types (!) And reasoning in the same manner, that is where I put type 3: How can a person be assertive, without being able to crystallize his or her thoughts? So, assertive types must be in the hot area and again, as a coach, I can transfer this knowledge to the students.

It is Interesting that within Enneatemps, dutifulness and assertiveness are both in the same are, which shows us what they have several qualities in common.

We also see here, that 3s and 6s can move within the range of dry and wet. This means they have the freedom to be dutiful on dry content OR wet content, depending on the situation and on what suits them best. To be dutiful on dry content is more likely for a type 1 who likes to be more on solid 'ground' –To be on wet content, is more likely for a 2, who tends to be based on flexible content. But important within this context is to come to the conclusion. We can also apply this to assertiveness. You can be assertive more on solid content (like an 8) or assertive with more changeable options (like a 7). If this is so, then 3s must be the most assertive of all assertive types (7,8,3) as they can move around the system. Along a similar line of reasoning it would make type 6 the most dutiful type among the dutiful group.

And lastly, we can say that being in the 'cold' area means to be under-determined (as Russ Hudson would call it), which is crystallizing thoughts slower. This is the place where withdrawn types are at home. Of course! They need space and time to do their 'thoughts crystallization'! Here we do not see types 3 and 6 within Hornevians, which means that assertiveness or dutifulness are unlikely to be in the area of Micro Cosmos, where determination is missing.

That means that types 3 and 6 accomplish their needs (Hornevians) within the range of Wet / Dry but at any cost they need to be in the hot area.

It would be interesting to know the difference between the dutiful group and the assertive group within this context as they are in the same area. But what makes the assertive, assertive and what make the dutiful types, dutiful?

This is very useful knowledge for coaching. For example, it would make it easier to teach what make an assertive type, assertive. But this goes beyond the range of this article and I'd refer interested readers to my website for that.

Now let’s move now to Harmonics:

Figure 4: Positioning of Type 3 and 6 based on Harmonics within Enneatemps

Harmonics proven to be true to show how types 3 and 6 would behave, when they are in a problem situation: it would appear that their co-types within Harmonics are in dry area and the variable would be moving within the range of cold / hot, depending on the situation and their own decision. Co-types of type 3 within Harmonics are type 1 and 5 (the Competency group) and of type 6 are Type 4 and 8 (the Emotional Realness group).

A plausible alternative way of looking at how types 3 and 6 respond is how they face a problem situation. The assertive group (1,3,5) and the emotional realness group (4,6,8) are all about dealing with and delivering solid content! For that you need firm ground to fight on or solid content to reason your competency.

For example, 6s become like 4s, if they need to be dry but slow in crystallizing thoughts. They must at all costs bring a heavy content (dry) to a quarrel, like 4s do. They can be faster if needed, but still bring relatively heavy content, which makes them 8-like. I observed that in Germany, where I used to live for many years. Germans always deliver a solid content answer in problem situations. It sometimes may take years to do that, other times it is very quick. Germany’s culture is based on type 6 culture values.

The same happens with type 3 of the competency group. In problem situations bringing competency means bringing content, this is why they are in the dry area. But they can 'choose', whether to be slow, or fast, depending on whether they prefer to act similar to type one, where ‘over-determination’ is more useful to them or preferring a more factual content, type 5-like, which helps them to be an even ‘heavier’ content.

Of course positive outlook has nothing to do with bringing any special content. Water always flows, and the problems will go away by themselves!

This mapping completes Enneatemps as a whole. It allows us to understand the situation with types 3 and 6 better, and of course type 9, which is also connected. Types 3 and 6 are basically everywhere in the map of temperaments, depending whether we are in a situation of meeting our needs (Hornevians) or solving a problem situation (Harmonics). And that means that type 9 is everywhere too, as type 9 is connected to 3 and 6. If type 9 gets involved in the world, it can use the energy of all other types! Otherwise, how can type 9 be the symbol of unity of all types!

For the temperaments of these two Types we could therefore infer that they would have “neutral” temperament which would be The Fifth Temperament.

And the final summary for all Types would then be:
